"Nerds. Once a tortured subrace of humans condemned to hiding in dark corners from the brutal hand of social torment... now, captains of industry!" - Chris Hardwick This is a book club for those of you who are interested in the kind of books that explore all of the great themes of science fiction, fantasy and horror -- like what, exactly, happens to the bourgeoisie in a zombie apocalypse (hint: they taste just like everyone else). We'll read everything from your bog standard literary novel to gr …

The Tasty Book Club pairs good books with good food. We read a variety of genres: silly books, smart books, memoirs, literary fiction and, yes, we even once read a book about werewolves. We pair the book with food or countries that appear in the book. If a book takes place in Greece, we eat Greek food. If we read a book that takes place in the American South, we go for BBQ. And so on. We aim for diversity among our book choices. Everyone is welcome to suggest books, but preference is given to b …

If you're new to comics or a lifelong fan, you'll enjoy our monthly meetings to discuss the great and near great of graphic novels. Comics for adults are a burgeoning art form that any literate person should familiarize themselves with. Each month, a different club member picks a selection that we'll all read and discuss at our monthly meetings. We've been meeting for about two years now, and we've already discussed works written and drawn by Dan Clowes, Chris Ware, Neil Gaiman, Marjane Satrapi, …

The idea of this group is to establish a community of writers that can learn from eachother on many different levels. This is based on the philosophy that we never really stop learning. No matter your walk of life, we all have some knowledge to barter. The Writers' Club of Whittier helps serious writers unlock the doors to publication through active participation in workshops using the club's proven workshop methods. Founded in 1953 by Susan Dibelka, the Writers' Club of Whittier began when Susan's adult writing class at Whittier High School grew so large that there was never enough time to read all the manuscripts. Students voted to start a club for writers in the Whittier area. Twenty-six charter members, all Susan's former students, were so …

Do you read or write action adventure stories? Can you identify with a protagonist who means well, but has a decidedly violent nature? Are you ready for the rampage that begins when his friends are ripped off or extorted, his girlfriend's kidnapped or his family butchered? Do you forgive his lack of investigative skills and reliance on the simplest methods to find an underling and torture out information leading to the next villain, then blows his head off, guts him like a fish or wrings his nec …

I tried to get something like this started a few months ago, but a death in the family derailed it. So, here we go again: This is a group for writers struggling with productivity. We meet once a week and more often via social media, phone, lifelines, whatever in order to do one thing: provide accountability so that we can track our progress and meet our goals. Traditional workshop elements are, if we want them, informal - we can read each other's stuff, but that's not the aim; nor is providing e …

Reading and discussion of Hilary Mantel's riveting reimagination of the life of Thomas Cromwell and the Court of Henry VIII. Fans of both Tudor history and of excellent historical fiction will love this book. The sequel, "Bring Up The Bodies" which follows Henry's minister through the Fall of Anne Boleyn has recently been released. The novels are worthy of extensive discussion and debate, both as works of fiction and how they relate to historical events. As Tudor history goes very well with win …
