Poetry, short stories, plays, novels, history, philosophy, science, not necessarily in that order, classics that are worthy of discussion, current and past, western and non-western, these are the works we discuss. The discussion is what is most important. We discuss these works to enlarge our understanding of the ideas that shape our culture and gain a deeper appreciation for what it means to be human.

There are several Meetup book clubs in the East Bay, but many of them are specialized (e.g., women-only, we only read such-and-such books, etc.), or their meetings fill to capacity so fast that I never get a chance to rsvp - so I decided to start this one. So this year we are celebrating 60 years with 007. Sure, Skyfall is a great movie, but what about the books? We'll be reading Ian Fleming's books starting with Casino Royale. Sure we'll talk about the movies: George Lazenby et al but it'll be fun to actually read the original intents. The locales of these books run the gamut from Las Vegas to London to Istanbul to Jamaica to Mahe Island. Hopefully we can find bars/restaurants that correspond to the locales and rap.
